A Christmas Cracker for You

Here’s a Christmas cracker…
“What does a playful leader look, sound and feel like?”

Warm, caring, super capable and fun-loving of course. 100% aligned in purpose with people at the heart of everything they do.

Meet one of the most playful leadership teams I had the pleasure of working with in 2025 – the leadership team of Health & Independent Living Support (HILS) led by Sarah Wren & Tom Cottam, supported by my friend and former colleague Victoria Morgan-Smith.

It was a great honour and even greater delight to work in service of such a truly inspirational team this December as we began to explore ways of bringing more joy and creativity to their everyday work through a culture of continuous learning and improvement.

Every day older and disabled people are admitted to hospital with preventable illnesses caused by poor nutrition, frailty and impacted by loneliness and isolation, causing strain and longer waiting lists for the NHS.

HILS can be compared to a 4th emergency service in many ways – a non-profit dedicated to helping people live healthier and happies lives at home for longer. They focus on supporting older and vulnerable people to stay happy, healthy, independent, and connected while easing the pressure on families, carers, and the NHS.

Last year, HILS delivered over 1.9 million acts of support by providing services such as meals on wheels and wellbeing checks to 18,000 people across 4 counties thanks to nearly 4000 dedicated members of staff.

Based on our research and repeated firsthand experience at The School of Play, when leaders lead from inside out through the power of play, the result is a super high performing leadership team that is highly resourceful, responsible, respectful, resilient and real – beautifully authentic like the Velveteen Rabbit.

What’s more, because such leaders have faith in their mission and one another, their action comes from a place of love and peace instead of soulless work and soul-sapping control.

The result? Business in the way it was originally intended – in service of society, our loved ones and ourselves.

Merry Christmas ~The Return to Brighter Days

I have a dream.
I dream for world peace.

“But wouldn’t life be boring if we had world peace?” some would say.

“What would we do? What would become of us?” others would ruminate.

In truth, what most of us are wondering is probably this:”What would life be like?”

Last Sunday, my daughter and I celebrated the darkest day of the year the Winter Solstice by going on pilgrimage at Avebury’s stone circles and henge – home to the largest megalithic (oldest) stone circle in the world.

Imagine my delight (nearly as deep as the muddy paths) as 80 of us pilgrims embarked on a walk for our bodies and to pilgrimage for our souls (you decide what that word means to you) led by Dr. Guy Hayward – a living bard and founder of The British Pilgrimage Trust.

So what would life be like if we lived in world peace?

My higher self imagines it would be wondrous, a kind of renaissance where we all flourish as future humans and for greater good. For sure we’d write many songs and celebrate with many dances…

… Because the winding path wouldn’t have been easy, at times even seemingly lonely or even impossible…

… There’s a reason why some of the most important work we do is called homework. Self-work is where true leadership begins.

… And it would have all been worth it because in taking the first step towards world peace through inner peace we re-discover we are the greatest joke and jokers of all!

May this season be filled with light, love laughter for you, your loved ones and your colleagues as we bring in the green and welcome the return of the light for a year of abundance and prosperity!

How will you choose to live your purpose?

Play for Peace for Real

🎂 🎂 🎂 July is the month for celebrating many of the precious patriarchs in my life – including one of my most playful teachers and fellow peaceseeker and peacemaker Dan Booth Cohen!

Back in 2020, I was searching for better tools to enable organisations and systems to transform and flourish for greater good when I came across Dan’s truly inspirational book about Family Constellations “I Carry Your Heart in My Heart – Family Constellations in Prison”.

I first began training with Dan in Systemic Constellations online during lockdown in 2021 and was very fortunate to train with him and Emily Blefeld in 2023-2024 on their Alchemical Constellations Facilitator training in the spiritual Menla Resort in New York created by the Dalai Lama.

To celebrate Dan and our mutual lifelong pursuit for creating peace, here’s the latest episode from The School of Play Play Alchemy podcast!

🕯️💖 🌎 If you’re looking for hope, magic and peace… Listen to our Play for Peace podcast episode and you might just be inspired to shift for greater good!

In Turbulent Times

Turbulence is an inevitable characteristic not just of modern life but existence itself. What if, instead of screaming and running around like headless chickens at the slightest of turbulence we were able to instead contemplate what the moment of change heralds? To contemplate both the losses and the gains. And perhaps, most important of all, to contemplate things as they are instead how we dreamwish they could be.

Last autumn, I had the delight of meeting Richard Rudd in London, founder of the Gene Keys method that promotes self-work through the Art of Contemplation.

Among the many gorgeous tools for supporting contemplation is the Triple Flame app which has brought unimaginable fun and delight to my daily practice of meditation. Not to mention a certain steadiness that has enabled me to better pilot my own plane, little by little, even in the most turbulent times in any given day.

Are You Ready to Take Flight this Spring?

One of my favourite things about my job as The Play Alchemist is helping folks reconnect with our greatest individual and collective superpower – True Play, of course!

“And pray tell, what does that look, sound and feel like?” I hear you ask – perhaps with a hint of sceptic longing.

For me, it’s this – “Female sparrow poised to take flight”. A gift from one of The School of Play alumni. I commissioned this piece after hearing with great delight that, since completing one of our courses, this alumnus went on to develop a daily practice of drawing which has brought immense joy and a sense of tranquility to her life, both at work and at home.

“Thank you so much for reconnecting me with my creative and playful self,” tweets this Bright One. “Your workshops have been a great way of learning to connect more deeply with others as well. These playdates have made me look at relationships with others differently.”

Our next Four Seasons online half-day workshop takes place on Friday, 21 March called Spring Blooms: Expanding Your Inner Life of Play.

You’re invited to join us – for one or all four seasons in 2025! Sign up HERE.

BONUS: These online workshops each come with a goodie box I create especially tuned to your play frequency!

What’s your vibe in anticipation of spring?

The Beauty of Play

Have you ever wondered what happens when children play to their hearts’ content?

Now imagine what happens when adults get to play to their hearts’ content…

Wonder no longer! This is what we look like and what we sound like when a bunch of likehearted and openminded adults get together… we bring to life our full potential by tapping into our greatest individual and collective super power what Dr. Stuart Brown and I like to call True Play.

Playful Leadership: CREATION THROUGH PLAY ALCHEMY is a groundbreaking introductory course to the concept, practice and magic of Play Alchemy – a term coined by Portia Tung, the founder of The School of Play. Play Alchemy describes the process, tools and techniques for transmuting the seemingly insurmountable challenges we face into positive outcomes so that we can thrive and have fun making a living in a VUCA world.

If you long to imagine at least six impossible things before breakfast and have realised a bunch of them by dinner time, this is the course for you. You’ll get to explore your relationship with play and creativity in community and experience deep joy as you regain your superpower of manifesting more of what you wish for like you used to as a child.

And we didn’t just co-write one song, we co-composed two! Special thanks to Stuart Cocks our music meister for putting music and video to our words of calm delight and sheer joy!

Song #1: Keep Calm Be Patient & Song #2: It’s Love Obviously #madewithlove #playfulleadership #playalchemy

I Capture the Castle

Did you know that at the heart of creativity – the kind that enables us to flourish and feel joy – is play without which we would lack the resourcefulness to get started in the first place?

Play is the skeleton key that unlocks our creativity, our infinite potential. When it comes to creativity, we are the creator and the creation as well as the creative process as we transmute and manifest our soul’s expression and deepest desires.

According to the creator of Systemic Constellations Bert Hellinger, “Love equals seeing plus distance minus judgment.” And because we are relational beings, this observation isn’t only poignant in terms of our relationship with others but more vitally when it comes to being in relationship with ourselves. What’s more, love for ourselves is essential when it comes to being in healthy relationship with our creations and our creative process.

Play Alchemy: Exploring Our Roots of Creativity a 3-day course in the art and science of creativity takes place this autumn 11-13 September at the beautiful Ashridge House (aka home-of-magic Hogwarts) in Berkhamsted, UK within a stone’s throw from London (if you’re Hagrid).

If you’re a grownup who longs to remember how to play and have fun – just like children do – be it at work, at home or anywhere you go, you’re invited to join Play Alchemist Portia Tung this September, along with a constellation of other grownups who love life, to rediscover and harness our greatest superpower – play of course!

Among this bright constellation of likehearted and lighthearted playmakers you will experience what being the best version of yourself feels like as we dance in profound partnership and embark on the play adventure of a lifetime.

Isn’t it high time you explored your roots of creativity?

Book a FREE discovery call with Portia to see what magic we can weave together through this Play Alchemy course!
